In our final look at events in Leinster House before the summer recess, the Dáil debates how to tackle domestic, sexual and gender-based violence and the summer economic statement is discussed in the Houses and in committee.

Meanwhile, the Cathaoirleach of the Seanad and the Taoiseach were present at the unveiling of a portrait of former Deputy Billy Fox, which marked 50 years since his murder during the Troubles.

Ireland: a parliamentary democracy

Ireland is a parliamentary democracy. The National Parliament (Oireachtas) consists of the President and two Houses: Dáil Éireann (House of Representatives) and Seanad Éireann (the Senate) whose functions and powers derive from the Constitution of Ireland enacted by the people on 1 July 1937. The Houses of the Oireachtas are situated at Leinster House, Dublin.
